hood to hood

The purpose of Hood To Hood is to continue to tear down the walls that separate us within the Black community by getting involved and engaging with different neighborhoods throughout the city each & every Saturday of the summer while spreading awareness and sharing resources with the people that are often left out of public view. This will also help gain and maintain trust in the city with the people that matter most.

Covid-19 Task Force

In March 2020, we launched our task force in response to the COVI9-19 global pandemic. We know that during challenging times our elders will suffer substantially. Our task force functions to ensure that our elders have: (1) Access to food and (2) Adequate support for their overall safety and well-being.

We recognize that with state and district-wide closures and restrictions it is increasingly difficult for households to be maintained. In response, we have extended our task force to single mothers without access to transportation. If you or your organization can donate food, sanitary products, cleaning products, or personal protective equipment, please contact us. This self-funded task force has been made possible by collective community donations. We are thankful for all of those that have contributed to making this program a success.

Safe Zone

Our Safe Zone initiative was designed to give community members spaces where they can be safe from danger and receive assistance. Our goal is to deliver a solution for our communities in response to needless acts of violence and predation. A Safe Zone business partner opens their doors to community members to provide refuge from harassment, an outlet to escape violence, or simply a welcoming place to gather and regroup in distress.

We believe in taking accountability for our neighborhoods by partnering with businesses that feel as passionately about their community as we do. We are actively growing our partnership base and promoting our Safe Zone partners throughout 2020.

Youth Mentorship

We work with education partners to support programs designed to inspire and encourage our youth. We strongly believe that early engagement plays a tremendous role in influencing the minds of our youth.

In 2020, New Era DMV has partnered with the Children's Defense Fund to support its Freedom Schools program. The CDF Freedom Schools program is a literacy and cultural enrichment program dedicated to stemming summer learning loss while empowering children, youth, and families to believe in their ability to make a difference. K-12 students are engaged in a multicultural, social justice themed curriculum stemming directly out of the Freedom Summer of 1964 movement. CDF also hosts six-week summer programs for K-5 grade children in Wards 7 & 8. The programs are virtual due to COVID-19 but we participate in weekly family/community “Freedom Zones” where we’ll give out books, school supplies, facilitate conversations on how to make change happen in DC (starting with local gov’t). We are hoping to bring back a block party culture and create a place for families to learn about community organizing, eat hot meals from the grill, and celebrate their heritage and culture.

buy black tour

The Buy Black Tour is a series of organized, community demonstrations of group economics in support of Black-owned businesses. New Era DMV collaborates with local Black-owned businesses for a promotional event. Each promotional event is aimed to attract new customers to participating business partners by increasing awareness of newer businesses or showcasing new products or services offered by established businesses. New Era DMV leverages the strength of our community-based network and our promotional events through street marketing, social media, and affiliate partners.

A strong economic base is the key to true liberty. It is vital to build a rapport between our community and Black-owned businesses. Buy Black Tours organize Black dollars and put them directly in the hands of Black business owners which helps expand those businesses and hire more of our community.

Queens Council

The Queens Council is a program geared towards building strong women and sisterhood ages 18-65, based upon six principle of sisterhood:

1. Self Love which breeds Love

2. Honesty Which breeds trust

3. Support which breeds Upliftment

4. Accountability which breeds Success

5. Loyalty which breeds Bonds

6. Unity which breeds a Community
